this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, august 12th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin in egypt and fears of a bloody confrontation between security forces and supporters of outed president mohamed morsi. the interim government is expected to break up the protests today. the morsi supporters are gathered in two locations. gas masks are being sold by vendors as they fortify their position in anticipation of a crackdown. jericka duncan has the latest. >> reporter: supporters of ousted egyptian president morsi morsi have strengthened the camp sites over the military since july 3rd. egyptian security forces say they will move in, perhaps as early as today, to clear out the demonstrators, but the morsi supporters say they aren't going anywhere. >> translator: any attack or killing of egyptians because of political differences which the

police and army are doing now will be punished and could ignite all of egypt. >> we could see bloodshed that could be horrendous. >> reporter: arizona senator john mccain visited with military leaders last week. >> if they go ahead and crack down in a violent way, are you going to call then for a cut-off then of aid to egypt? >> i'm afraid that the congress of the united states would have to consider carefully the elimination of aid. >> reporter: but egypt receives billions of dollars of aid from the u.s. in part because it helps keep the peace with israel. a key u.s. ally in the region. joint chief chairman martin dempsey is scheduled to arrive in tel aviv today to discuss the security issue in egypt. jericka duncan, cbs news, new york. 18 of the 20 u.s. consulates and embassies in the middle east and northern africa closed recently due to terrorist threats have reopened.

the u.s. embassy in yemen will remain closed though. the diplomatic staff there have been evacuated. and the consulate in lahore, pakistan, will remain closed. and this morning we are learning more about the circumstances leading to the rescue of a kidnapped california teenager. an fbi hostage team caught up with hannah anderson and her alleged kidnapper in the idaho wilderness on saturday, but it took a chance encounter with some area horseback riders to set the rescue in motion. they said red flags went off. carter evans has our report. >> there were cheers with the announcement of 16-year-old hannah anderson's rescue after fbi agents gunned down her alleged kidnapper james dimaggio in the idaho wilderness. valley county sheriff patty bolin. >> hannah is safe and that was our first priority from the very beginning. >> reporter: dimaggio and anderson were spotted from the air on saturday. a hostage rescue team hiked more

than two hours to get to their camp. authorities reportedly waited until the two were separated before making their move. it was a violent end to a horrifying ordeal that began last sunday when dimaggio, a good family friend, allegedly killed hannah's mother and 8-year-old brother at his california home before he set it on fire. with dimaggio and amber missing, an amber alert went out across the west. there were reported sightings in northern california and southern oregon, but the biggest break came wednesday when a group of horseback riders spotted them near moorhead lake near the idaho wilderness. mark john said they looked out of place, but he didn't think much of it until he got home. >> then the news flashed on, and the amber alert was on the television and i told my wife, that is that girl we seen on the mountain. >> reporter: during the encounter, the two kept kwee yet.

>> if she sent us a signal expressing that she was in trouble, we certainly didn't key in on that. >> reporter: on friday authorities found dimaggio's car in idaho. a day later came the news hannah's family had hoped desperately to hear. her grandmother, sandra brit. >> we all cheered and hugged and hugged and cried. we're just so happy. so happy and relieved that hannah will be fine. >> hannah's grandfather told me on the phone that she had told her friends that she was uncomfortable with dimaggio because he recently admitted he had a crush on her. now her grandfather wishes someone had spoken out sooner so this tragedy might have been avoided. carter evans, cbs news, los angeles. well, a 2-year-old boy from rhode island who was missing after his mother and another woman were killed has been found safe. isaiah perez was found by police wandering alone in a housing project miles from his home yesterday. he was not injured. earlier his mother and another woman were found murdered in

their home. two men have been arrested and could be charged with kidnapping and murder as early as today. the father of nsa leaker edward snowden plans to visit his son in russia very soon. lon snowden hasn't talked to his son since he left the u.s. he wants to discuss a legal strategy to fight charges in this country. susan mcginnis reports. >> reporter: edward snowden's father wants his son to have his day in american court. >> where my son chooses to live the rest of his life will be his decision, but i would like at some point in time he should come back to the u.s. because i believe the truth will shine through. >> reporter: lon plans to meet his son in moscow to discuss ways to fight the espionage charges against the contractors. he's been granted asylum for one year. his father is not open to a plea deal. >> the only deal will be true justice. >> snowden is accused of leaking classified nsa information. his revelations have sparked debate about u.s. surveillance

practices, and late last week president obama vowed to make the program more transparent and accountable. >> some steps to make americans more comfortable will actually make americans less safe. >> reporter: republican congressman peter king says surveillance is a legitimate role of government. >> we're talking about life and death, and having lived in new york through 9/11, i know what that means. we cannot afford to have this be a debating society. we need decisions made quickly, yes or no, up and down. lives are at state. >> reporter: lon snowden said much of what the president discussed on friday was superficial. susan mcginnis, cbs news. two of three people reported missing from a mud slide in central colorado have been found safe. at least one person was killed by the mudslides, which destroyed six homes in manitou springs. a woman seen clinging to a free friday night is still unaccounted for. 30 others' homes were also damaged. and firefighters in southern
